JS50/43/7 RAF cover dual numbered AF11 as part of the Airborne Forces mini-series for Operation Husky, which was the Allied Invasion of Sicily in 1943.
The cover artwork shows gliders of the 1st Air Landing Brigade being towed by Dakotas, the landings at Lacata and troops in North Africa. After the capture of Sicily this prepared the way for the invasion of Italy two months later.
The cover bears 24p Claudius stamp and is cancelled with BFPS 2358 postmark for the 50th anniversary of Operation Husky 9 July 1993. The cover has been flown in a Hercules of No 30 Squadron from RAF Lyneham to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus overflying the sea area off Catanis, Syracuse and Cape Passero in memorium for the 69 gliders of the 1st Air Landing Brigade which crash landed in the sea with the loss of 252 Red Devils.
